Re: can not access forumotion from algeria
Hello,
What exactly do mean by can not connect? Do you get an error message? If so, may you please post a screenshot of the message?
Does this effect all forumotion forums or only certain ones?
Finally, if there is any possibility that the government has blocked/banned forumotion in their country, there is not much Forumotion can do. Do you think this might be a possibility?

The problem is not only for me
many people from algeria have this problem
and i previously try many browser and device
the problem disappears only when we use a VPN
Re: can not access forumotion from algeria
It means that the browser is unable to resolve the name you are trying to reach. It could be an incorrect proxy setting in your browser, or a problem where antivirus or a firewall is blocking the address or possibly a network problem with your connection or a setting in your router if you are using one.
To eliminate all possible causes except browser, try going to the same address using a different browser, if that works, then it is a browser setting problem.
If that does not work, then try turning off firewall and antivirus briefly and see if it works. If it does work, then it is a firewall or antivirus problem, turning off one at a time will determine which is the cause.
If that does not work, then it may be a problem with your NIC card not getting an address. To check that on windows use start, run and type in cmd, then in the black window type in ipconfig /all and see what address is displayed. If it is all zeros or a 169.254.***.*** address then it is a connection problem. If it displays a proper address, then the next possible place could be in a router setting or an incorrect DNS setting.
Router status should display all connection information if i is working properly, the WAN address must have an IP for it to work. If it is all zeros then refresh or turning it off and then on may reset the connection.
If you are using Google Chrome browser turning off "use IPV6" in the settings may cause it to work again.

Hello,
Except VPN, have you checked your antivirus/firewall's settings? Is there any other way to connect on internet without any VPN usage? Sometimes VPNs firewalls blocking some domain names for security reasons. Try to use another proxy to test if you are able to can connect to forumotion forums.

Actually, this is VERY SPECIFICALLY a Forumotion problem. Something about the way your software is written REQUIRES a certain, open, and probably very insecure, connection type, which is why many people don't have problems connecting, but anyone behind anything that's secured in some way, firewalls, public wifi connections, etc, you guys have somehow either intentionally disallowed, or my mistake, have declined connections from folks like myself who depend on public wifi for the time being.
I have been testing this problem from many places, in 2 states as I've travelled so far, while trying to figure it out. There are times when I can connect with a Tor browser via a public wifi space, but even then, I often get disconnected mid stream and have to jump through some hoops to get it reconnected.
At all of these places and times, I'm able to connect, with not problems, via my phone browser, but always have problems with my computers browsers... Firefox, IE, Chrome, Tor, etc...
I'm not sure if you're familiar with the Programming side of things, or just helpful tech support folks who wouldn't have intimate knowledge of such things, but I do, even if not of Forumotion, directly. I've been programming for over 30 years, much of it internet based.
Again, I'm not sure if this is just and oversight on the part of the programmers or owners of the software, but I rather expect you could begin losing clients fairly easily as word of this problem has been getting out, and you're likely to start recipient more complaints about it in the future.
I'm quite certain whatever the problem is, it would not be that difficult to remedy, once the offending code has been identified and corrected.
As things are now, I'm having to help a dear friend move to a new webhosting provider and forum software, because too many folks are unable to access what is a very important site to them. It's unfortunate we're probably going to have to start from scratch in doing so, unless this is something you folks are aware of and can provide a work around at least.
Thanks for your time and attention,
Lynx

Re: can not access forumotion from algeria
None of us on the support forum are tech team we are only members of the public like you and all the other members in here we don't have any power over the servers or any other tools in the head office.
we all work from home other then the Pro admin's who are paid staff of the head office.
we can make a report about this but if the members have had no problem making a forum before and now there is a problem then that is why i say its could be and Problem with there ISP.
I can not see it being our end as they had connection a week ago!!

I understand! =)
I've worked in tech support situations myself, so I don't mean to sound angry or as if I'm blaming you good folks for the problems.
And at this moment, I'm having no issues connecting to This Particular forumotion forum, so it's possible it could be a simple setting in the individual forummotion forums others use, using default setting that they're not aware of what or how they could change to enable full user access, or possibly Not have access to those setting, if they're using a provider that hides those options from their users...
But as with the user in Algeria, it may be that while my current connection is allowed here, and theirs isn't except by proxy, it could still be part of a related issue.
I have also had this same experience across many of them (other forumotion forums I've checked( where there's a message along the lines of, after trying to log in
"You have specified an incorrect or inactive username, or an invalid password."
and also a
"You are not connected."
message, as well (although sometimes that latter seems to have been edited out in some way)
Perhaps that is an issue you guys are familiar with? Something I could help my friend change a setting for?
Or at the least, my posts might help others experiencing this have a bit less frustration that it's "not just them" if they happen to come here and see.
And help you folks answer, as well, since we know not every person involved has all the answers themselves, and we each just do the best we can with what we know =)
But I think it would be Great if you could pass on a message to "corporate" or whoever might have more direct control of whatever it is that causing this sort of thing, if no one else has a remedy that can be relatively easily implemented by folks who might be nervous about changing settings and such without clear directions as to How to do so, without "messing everything else up" if you know what I mean ;-)
Like I said, quite familiar with "being tech support" and working with people of varying skill and confidence levels =)
Thank you for your response! =D

Re: can not access forumotion from algeria
We will make a report, but there is only one thing I am confused about with your theory.
You say we are blocking by mistake anything that is not a insecure connection (ex. Public connections, etc) and blocking secure connections. This can't be the case, as most people, including myself use SECURE internet connections from well established ISPS and and we all can access our forums without any issues. If it was forumotion blocking secure wifi connections, then we all wouldn't be able to access our forums via our secure home networks and phone networks.
It sounds very much like either an issue with the area, ISP or otherwise that is at the root of the issue. We have not had any other reports of this type of thing other yours, so it is definitelly not a global global issue.
We will make a report, however, so that the head office can look into it tommorow.

Re: can not access forumotion from algeria
Perhaps it is INSECURE connections that are more of the problem, then, seeing as they're public access wifi hotspots that I'm having the real problems with, although there was this one motel I was staying at somewhat recently that used Sonicwall, and that caused similar issues, resulting in my experimenting with the Tor browser, so... my mistake.

I some times log in at a cafe outside my works office when i am at work in the day and never had a problem and that is a hot spot wifi that over 100+ use at the same time and i have never had a problem i also use my work office wifi and not had a problem. when my internet was down last week i used the library wifi and found not to have a problem. As my colleague brandon_g has said we will make a report and lets hope the head office will respond to this.

This blockage is not from Forumotion but of Algeria who for one reason or another has apparently blocked access to some of our IP where the reported problem. Shocked
Difficult to find a solution to a problem that is not of our service but a decision to external entities controlling Internet access in the whole country! However, we study the situation to see if we can do something.
Meanwhile, users affected by this blockage may well contact the agency responsible for the regulation of Internet access in Algeria in order to know the precise reason for the blockage they face and seek a possible lifting ...
