[ONLY TOPIC] Admin Level new user activation not working - all users being automatically activated
Technical Details
Forum version : #Invision
Position : Founder
Concerned browser(s) : Internet Explorer
Who the problem concerns : All members
When the problem appeared : As soon as the forum was setup and being tested
Forum link : ( link is hidden, you must reply to see )
Description of problem
The forum I am setting up is for members only. I have set the user activation to Admin (so that I can approve all registration requests). The activation process is not working as per the description of the "admin" level. Basically any registration request is automatically being activated. I do receive an email stating there has been a request submitted, but when I click on the link to activate the user I get a message from the forum stating "no such user exists" (note: I got the same error when I activated my account to join the support forum).Regardless of the email link not working, the user is always being activated.

Re: [ONLY TOPIC] Admin Level new user activation not working - all users being automatically activated
Hello @GaryCook.
Do you have any other admins that have power in your Admin Panel? If so, it could be the fact that they are activating the accounts before you view your e-mail because with the 'Admin" activation on that would be the case. But again, it could be an issue if you are the only one with access. I'll tell you what, I will perform a test and join your forum. Then view your e-mail to activate my account, we will see what it says and if possible provide us with a screenshot on this topic.
~Update: I have joined your forum and it shows the following message

Only one admin
Thanks Legionheart. I am the only admin. When you registered you displayed as an activated user in the Admin Panel. I have since deactivated you, as I did not know who you were. I assume you were able to access the forum prior to my deactivating your id. Is that correct? If not, then perhaps this is just an issue in the admin panel showing you as activated when you actually are not.
When I did the initial testing of activation, I found it a little inconsistent, but at that point I was assuming we would allow guests, which we have now decided we will not. I will do some additional testing myself to try and determine if this is just a display issue in the admin panel.
~update: Unfortunately, I was able to create a new user id and it was automatically activated. I was able to log in immediately with the ID and access the forum. So this is not just an issue with displaying activated in the admin panel.

Re: [ONLY TOPIC] Admin Level new user activation not working - all users being automatically activated
Hello,
Something strange is going on, I also registered on your forum to see what happen. I also got the message that it needed to be activated by an admin before it could be used. I then tried to login using my details to see if it would work and it actually worked.
If you are correct that you have it set to admin activation only, then something isn't right. I can't say if it is a glitch yet or not as so far this is the first time we have heard of this and your forum so far is the only forum that this is confirmed as happening.
Something definitelly doesn't seem right though, I will run a couple tests on my test forum to see if I can duplicate the problem there. If I can I will make a report on this issue to a pro admin, if I can't I will wait to see what staff members think of this first.
You may delete my account on your forum if you wish.
Edit: Ok so I tried to duplicate the problem on my test forum by setting it to admin only activation then registering a new account on it. Then I tried logging into this account WITHOUT manually activating it first in the admin panel, when I tried to login using the details of the new unactivated account, it would not let me login. I tried twice and it would not do it.
This tells me it may not be a bug in our system afterall. May you please provide me with a screenshot of the ACP-->User&groups-->User options screen so I can confirm it is indeed set to admin only activation?

Re: [ONLY TOPIC] Admin Level new user activation not working - all users being automatically activated
HMM that is really funny i have just tested this on my forum 3 times and i have No problem at all have you gave this a try ?
log in as founder of your forum turn it on to No activation :
Then go to your General tab >> Forum >> Configuration >> Resynchronize your forum :
Resynchronize your forum then go back and change it to Admin then Resynchronize your forum again.
It maybe that your settings are just slow getting to the servers and it needs a slap to get it back in time

Re: [ONLY TOPIC] Admin Level new user activation not working - all users being automatically activated
Thanks for your replies and testing.
As per APE's direction, I did change the setting to "No Activation", resync, then back to "Admin" and resnyc. After those steps I was still able to register a new ID and go directly into the forum.
Is there a chance I have just missed something when I created the forum? Is there private vs open forums? It looked to me that I just controlled access to content, by granting the appropriate access to the categories I created.

I don't know why it is doing that. It seems to be set correctly. I can't figure out why that would happen. It has me stumped for sure. .

Re: [ONLY TOPIC] Admin Level new user activation not working - all users being automatically activated
Thanks Brandon, I guess I need a little advice around steps forward. As this feature is not working for the forum I created, should I be looking for a different forum tool? I am able to control access during work hours as I get notified and I can manually deactivate. That is quite a pain and I won't be able to guarantee someone from out side our user community could get into the forum.
Any thoughts?

Re: [ONLY TOPIC] Admin Level new user activation not working - all users being automatically activated
Okay it looks like we need to make a report about this to our team as this is not right and we can't come up with why it's not working for you.
I will make a report now and get back to you
if you get lots of new accounts made on your forum that is one of us testing things.
Don't worry the accounts will be deleted by us as we go
Please Note as its now the weekend it may not be done right away but we will try our best to get back to you as soon as we can.

Re: [ONLY TOPIC] Admin Level new user activation not working - all users being automatically activated
@Ape, is this affecting Invision only or any other of board version, cuz I found kind of a similar 'issue/bug' about a year ago on my phpBB3 I remember... Might be related. I never reported it because I had a lot of going on on my board with JS, HTML and CSS back then and I did expect errors.
Re: [ONLY TOPIC] Admin Level new user activation not working - all users being automatically activated
I am not married to using the "Invision" style. I believe, from what I have read in your documentation, I can switch my style without impacting any of the setup or postings. If that is the case, I can convert the site if you would like me to try that.
Let me know
Thanks

Oh great. If I were to be part of the team on here I'd ask u to switch the theme to for instance phpBB3 to test if this is an 'Invision Only' issue Your forum is still under construction, right? So, you can It 'd help Paris hugely to face that pressure! Thanks in advance for all your help scoring this one
Re: [ONLY TOPIC] Admin Level new user activation not working - all users being automatically activated
I switched the forum over to phpBB3 and registered with a test id. Unfortunately it was automatically activated.

Re: [ONLY TOPIC] Admin Level new user activation not working - all users being automatically activated
No problem, just keep me posted. I am going to keep the new style as I like it better than the previous one. For now I will just keep watching for non-member type registrations and manually deactivate them.

No sweat. Yeah, I just L O V E phpBB3 myself. It's the best! Good luck solving this one!
Hey, just deactivate new registrations from the user tab in your ACP or put your stuff into Holiday Mode (while solving this one) to prevent newly made registrations. They'll still be queued prolly and you can activate 'm lateron. Just telling!
Gonna watch tv now, so I'll be off
Re: [ONLY TOPIC] Admin Level new user activation not working - all users being automatically activated
Okay, that's a good tip until it is solved. I like your Icon. I used to sell a product called Panther.

Re: [ONLY TOPIC] Admin Level new user activation not working - all users being automatically activated
Thanks for looking after this issue so quickly.
I did some testing and it seems to now function as it is intended to. I did run into some issues using the activation "click here" link on my first test, but the second test worked fine (including the activation link).
I will let you know if I run into any other issues.
Thanks Again
Gary
