Imgur images and insert image function
Hi. I did not find an answer to this issue in my searches, hence the current post.
One of the moderators for my forum has already posted a question about an issue with the displaying of images hosted by Photobucket here: https://help.forumotion.com/t155600-photobucket-image-links-previously-worked-this-week-but-not-anymore#1070724
It appears that there is an additional and possibly related issue users on our forum have run into: the insert image function does not appear to work correctly with images from Imgur.
Here is a description of the issue by the user:
"Honestly, not sure what the problem is from Imgur. I had used the insert image function in the menu bar instead of Host an Image, copying and pasting the BBCode (which I had been doing from the beginning), but just in the last couple of days it doesn't work (half the code ends up missing) once the send post button is hit. A tiny shrunken box appears in the post where the picture(s) should be. When I go back in to edit the post is when you notice the missing elements of the image link. So now, as I said, I just use the host an image button and I don't have any problems (and I do it all from my hard drive, not Imgur)."
Source topic/post 32 here: http://onesixthfigures.forumotion.com/t91-heroes-afterwork#2660
In another post within the same topic, the same user described the issue as follows:
"I did notice for my own postings from Imgur, and this could all just be coincidence, that once the maximum size of images was adjusted here that I could no longer use the insert image function on the site by pasting in the url link. Every time I tried, the address was shrunk down/missing parts, and nothing would change that. So, like the host image function that I use for all the New Product threads I've started, I've had to do that with my own pics as well."
Source topic/post 30 here: http://onesixthfigures.forumotion.com/t91-heroes-afterwork#2654
Unlike the Photobucket images problem (which do not display within the posts for most users across several browsers), this does not seem to affect Imgur images already posted, just ones that users are currently trying to import. The second description quoted above appears to suggest a possible connection between the revised Images resize settings (we've settled on 800 x 1600) and the change in functionality, although this seems surprising to me. Editing these settings (including eliminating any resize) did not solve the problem (at least with the Photobucket images -- it was not possible to test the Imgur issue).
Can someone advise on what is going on, what has changed, and whether there is a fix to this issue, so as to allow easier and successful insert image from Imgur?
Any help will be most appreciated, thank you in advance!

Re: Imgur images and insert image function
Host an Image is uploading an image, not posting one from another host.

Thank you, I realize that. The user uses Host an Image as a workaround because Insert an Image (where you would paste a url link) does not seem to be working. The question is: How do we get Insert an Image to work correctly again?
Re: Imgur images and insert image function
Could you post an URL's link here, please?

Re: Imgur images and insert image function
After consulting with user and designing a test thread, I can expand on the issue. It seems that it is connected to the use of the Edit function after the original creation of a post. In some cases, merely pressing the Edit button alters the url/link for the image and the image becomes unviewable. Regardless of whether an actual edit was made. Again, this has been tested with images hosted on Imgur and on the user's PC.
Here is the test thread, but also see the specific links below for 5 different circumstances:
http://onesixthfigures.forumotion.com/t162-image-hosting-test-thread-for-the-gov-na
1: Using the "Insert Image" button on the Menu bar and linking from Imgur BBC code. "Edit" was not pressed after the initial posting, and the image displays fine.

2. Using the "Insert Image" button on the Menu bar and linking from Imgur BBC code. This time "Edit" was pressed (although no actual changes were made) and the image does not display, the url/link text having been changed automatically by the system.

3. Using the "Host an Image" button on the Menu bar and "+select files" (directly from hard drive). "Edit" was not pressed after the initial posting, and the image displays fine.

4. Using the "Host an Image" button on the Menu bar and "+select files" (directly from hard drive). This time "Edit" was pressed after the initial posting (though nothing was actually edited), and the image still displays fine.

5. Using the "Host an Image" button on the Menu bar and using "URL" from Imgur BBC Code link. Doesn't work.

I hope this helps demonstrate the issue(s) at play and you can advise further.

Re: Imgur images and insert image function
Which mode are you in when this happen: source and WYSIWYG?

Re: Imgur images and insert image function
Not sure I completely understand your question or its implications. I have asked the user for clarification, but I assume he is doing the same thing I would, which is use the default post interface and the Insert Image or Host an Image buttons. If it helps, the forum settings have "Activate the WYSIWYG mode by default in the posts" set to No.
Re: Imgur images and insert image function
When you say BBCode, do you mean you are entering that in the insert an image button? If yes, that does not sound right. It should only be the image's URL link.

Re: Imgur images and insert image function
I related your question to the user, and here is what I received in response (with a snapshot):
"I'm just using the default. Here's a screen cap of the link for that picture (using what Imgur tells you to use for forums, etc.), and up until a few days ago it worked ok. So, something, somewhere must have been changed..."
It looks like that is what Imgur calls the link recommended for use on forums. It looks like a url to me, but I am not a computer guy.

Re: Imgur images and insert image function
The problem may be that he is copying and pasting the bbcode in the insert url spot. You do not need to do this as Imgur has already done so.
Tell him to try just pasting it into the message and it should work as is without needing to use insert image button.

Re: Imgur images and insert image function
Thank you Brandon, will do. Although we did not discuss it above (because it was not a problem), if memory serves me, I think he mentioned that the option you suggest actually works. But I'll get back to you on that.
Re: Imgur images and insert image function
I have consulted with our Imgur user with whom we have been working on this matter, and he confirms that simply pasting the Imgur BBCode into the text box (not the Insert Image function) is a successful and stable solution for the posting of Imgur-hosted images. We have tested it, and consider the problem solved.

Glad I could help . Have a good day .
