Grammar Errors Empty Grammar Errors

Post by MrMario May 29th 2011, 7:47 pm

Hello,

Do you see a grammar error or miss spelling? Post the original piece along with the correct version.

To ensure that its being looked at and to help locate this issue, please provide a screenshot and the location.

Example:

Admin Panel >> General >> Configuration

As of right now, this topic will only support English languages. Once we have more translators, the language will be added to the list. Not all translations will be updated right away as it will be reviewed before going public to ensure the updated version is correct.

Thanks for your help!

Grammar Errors Empty Re: Grammar Errors

Post by lisa1302 May 29th 2011, 8:16 pm

A few that bug me!
Control Panel

1. Home - Make your Forum Look Better
'You have the possibility to can customize your forum appearance by applying different skins or by modifying your templates.'

2. Display - Choose a Theme
'Choose your appearance among from our collection of styles.'

3. Display - HomePage (should this be index?) - Structure and hierarchy
'The information below will allow you to customize topics and categories hierarchy on the forum homepage.' Again it should really be index?

4. Display - Avatars - Avatar Gallery
'You are here in the dedicated space for your avatars. The avatar is the appearance that a user takes in a virtual world. Choosen Chosen by the user himself, the avatar representing him appears each time he connects to a virtual world, to visually identify him.'
I don't know really - this whole paragraph is odd!

5. Templates
'In this page, you can modify templates and change your forum look.
Modified templates are written in red green (unpublished templates are shown red)

6. Modules
'This tab covers all the extra modules you can add to your forum; portal, blogs, gallery, points, RPG features, chatbox and even HTML pages for most experimented more experienced users.'
??? I think that is what it means anyway!

Grammar Errors Empty Re: Grammar Errors

Post by Guest May 29th 2011, 9:40 pm

In Profile => Preferences => Allow newsletters the description shouldn't be...

Notify by email whenever an Administrator/Moderator sends you a PM

But...

Newsletters are massive e-mails written and sent by this forum's Administrators. If set to yes, you will receive them in your e-mail inbox.

Or something similar.

When registering, if your password is too simple (for ex. 123456) you get this error message.

Your password doesn't meet our security agreements. Try a password more complex.

We recommend using a mixture of numbers and letters in uppercase and lowercase to create a password more secure.

If your password is not complex enough, you will not be able to continue registering.

IMHO, that's a little incoherent. This would be better.

Your password is too simple. Try using a more complex password.

We recommend using a combination of numbers and letters in uppercase and lowercase to create a more secure password.

If your password is still not complex enough, you will not be able to continue registering.

For members that have turned off their PM inboxes. You get this message when trying to send them a PM.

{MEMBER} has choosen to not receive private messages.

There are an extra 'o' and a grammar mistake (it's not "to not" but "not to") in there, it should be...

{MEMBER} has chosen not to receive private messages.

The notification e-mail you get when someone sends you a PM is titled...

New Private Message has arrived on {FORUM},

The comma should be deleted. This is how each e-mail should be titled as.

New Private Message has arrived on {FORUM}

And as for the notification e-mail for new replies, this is the body.

Hello ,

You receive this e-mail because you are watching the topic, "{TOPIC}" at "{FORUM}". This topic has received a reply since your last visit. You can use the following link to view the newly posted replies, no more notifications will be sent until you visit the topic.

{URL}

If you no longer wish to watch this topic you can either click the "Stop watching this topic link" located at the bottom of the topic above, or by clicking the following link:

{TOPIC}?unwatch=topic

There are a few punctuation mistakes. Commas aren't supposed to be separated from the word it precedes, and there is no need to use quotation marks. Therefore, this should be the result.

Where did the other topic go btw? I'm sure I posted lots of other proposed corrections that were never made, now they're gone.

Base, that's correct, even though e-mail it's preferred. Anyhow, if "email" is how you want to spell it, then the word should be spelled like that in every profile setting, and not as "email" in some and "e-mail" in others. Yup, I'm too detailed.

I have 2 spelling mistakes to report.

1) When you're reading a Private Message, this is shown at the top, below the title.

From {Sender} To {Recipient}, {Date}

There's no reason for "to" to be capitalized. Therefore, it should be...

From {Sender} to {Recipient}, {Date}

2) On your profile, the friends block below your name and avatar is shown as...

{User} Friends

Since "friends" is a belonging, it should be...

{User}'s Friends

I may be wrong about some things I pointed here of above, so if I am, please let me know. Wink

Thanks everyone. I'll pass these to a pro admin.

There is a spelling mistake in the {LOGGED_AS} tag in the Greek language. It should be "Καλώς ήρθατε username" instead of "Καλός ήρθατε username". Can you fix it please?

In ACP > General > Newsletters > Write and Send > Simple text message. This is the description.

You choose HTML mode. Peoples who don't have a compatible mail client will see this simple text message.

Should be this instead.

Hello,

I did most of the changes here. There are a few that I have questions/problems with a few which will be talked about with The Godfather.

@lisa1302 I asked about 3 and for 4 if you could rewrite it if you can. That would be helpful. Smile

@jimmyc I am only able to do English. Sorry

Post by Guest June 16th 2011, 3:20 am

@ MrMario: You're welcome! Thank you for applying most of the changes we all proposed. They look great! I hope the pending ones get accepted and done too, good luck with that.

In the meantime, another report. In Profile > Friends and Foes, there are 2 grammar mistakes that should be corrected.

1. Friend Requests Sent should be Sent Friend Requests. The adjective must precede the noun.

2. For Received Friend Requests,
These requests are pending, click "+" to accept or "-" to refuse them.

An object after "accept" is missing, as it cannot be omitted. It should be...

These requests are pending, click "+" to accept them or "-" to refuse them.

In ACP > Display > Colors > CSS Stylesheet > Optimize your CSS. This is what the tooltip shows.

The option allows you to optimize your CSS code. This speeds up the loading of your pages and therefore improves the navigation of your visitors on your forum.

Warning your CSS must be valid for the smooth functioning of this option.

Should be...

This option allows you to optimize your CSS rules. This speeds up the loading of your pages and therefore improves the navigation of your visitors on your forum.

Warning: your CSS must be valid for this option to work properly.

Sorry if I sound like a grammar Nazi, but I believe poor language shows unprofessionalism. Very Happy

Thanks in advance!

Post by Guest June 26th 2011, 12:48 am

Thank you for applying all of the changes we've suggested, I hope they get accepted soon.

Something I noticed that has been changed is in any Statistics tab in any profile. "Find all topics by [member]" has been changed for "Find all topics where [member] participated".

The tense doesn't seem right to me and it could be misunderstood. Having participated could mean many things...

How about "Find all topics where [member] has posted in"?

While you're there...

Visitors messages number should be Visitor messages number
Last visitors message should be Last visitor message
Visitors messages for [member] should be [member]'s visitor messages
Send new message on [member] profile should be Send a new message on [member]'s profile

No it shouldn't.

Permissions in terms of the forums means what the users can do, and it makes more sense to have it as permissions of this forum.

Unless it says; "your permissions in this forum"

Your correction sounds better. It should definitely be "Your permissions in this forum" but not what it currently is (Permissions of this forum), because it's the user and not the forum that has permission to see it, write on it, etc.

Just for the record, it should be Your permissions in this forum. Apologizes to MrMario for that one. Embarassed

Here's another thing I think should be corrected. When you go on someone's Wall (call it Visitor Messages, it's the same) and click on the button to write a new Visitor Message, this is the page's title.

Send new message on Member profile

This should be,

Send new message on Member's profile

As "Member profile" makes no sense at all. It's his profile, after all. Razz

Grammar Errors Empty Re: Grammar Errors

Post by mario-182 July 2nd 2011, 6:12 pm

I was told to post this here:
I've noticed that when i received topic reply notification emails, it starts with "Hello , bla bla bla". What I'd really like is for the username in question to go just before the comma, which it seems like it's trying to do
I'm just not sure why it's blank like this

I've now noticed that it may be beyond forum-specific configuration as even the email I got from this forum had the same issue

Another few things that stick out to me:
Who is Online ? >> Who is online?
Legend : [ Moderators ] >> Legend: [Moderators]

I tried editing these in my own forum, but was unable to through CSS

---

EDIT: I actually just gave the notification email a full read and would like to put forward the following suggestion:

Original:
Code:

Post by Guest July 4th 2011, 6:05 am

@mario-182: I think this format would be a lot better.

Hello USERNAME,

You are receiving this e-mail because you are watching the topic TOPIC_NAME at FORUM_NAME, which has received a reply since your last visit. You can use the following link to go straight to the reply. No more notifications will be sent until you visit the topic.

TOPIC_URL#POST

If you no longer wish to watch this topic you can either click the "Stop watching this topic" link located at the bottom of the topic or click the following link:

TOPIC_URL?unwatch=topic

--
FORUM_NAME

- No quotation marks were needed.
- The action of receiving an e-mail is happening right now, no need to use the past.
- There was no need to repeat "this topic". Using the "which" relative clause solved that.
- "To view the newly posted reply" didn't sound that good.
- The last sentence needed to have both verbs in the same tense.

You agree? Smile
