how to award extra points to certain users.

I've managed to set up ranks with points. However, we intend to hold competitions, and I intend to award extra points for the winner of the competition. Is there a way I can edit the amount of posts they made so as to award them a new rank if they win enough points?

Ranks can only be automatically added to a member by the number of posts.

If you want to give points to members, you have to do it manually:
Administration Panel > Modules > Points & Reputation > Points System > Points Donation

thank you, I've found that now. Is there a way of connecting the points to the ranks? Or can a special badge be awarded for a certain number of points, that might be displayed near the users avatar?

Sorry but it is not possible with points.

In the tutorial, it is a forum. You have to manually deduct or add points here:
Administration Panel > Modules > Points & Reputation > Points System > Points Donation

ah thank you very much, I thought you could only add points there, cause of the word donation. Well that's answered my question. Thank you all. Solved.

You can deduct points, too. If a member has 100 points, you can enter 50 and that member will then have only 50 points.
