In progress The variables in the Memberlist Template

Post by Dageraad January 6th 2016, 11:06 pm

Hello all,

  1. Where are the variables that the memberlist_body Template refers to (like memberrow•INTERESTS, memberrow•JOINED etc.) generated and stored?
  2. How can I learn the variable names for the other profile fields, both the default ones that aren't mentioned here, and the custom ones that I created (in the section Users & Groups > Profiles) ?

(Btw I replaced the . between characters with • to not have it regarded as a link.)

(I've changed the title of the thread and brought the OP back to the basic issues, in the hope that this will invite someone to point me in the right direction.)

Okay I'm in the page source of an individual forum member now, and the custom profile fields do show up here.

Can I somehow deduct the exact name of the memberlist.??? for my custom profile field from that page source? I see stuff like <select class="gensmall" id="profile_field_7_2" name="profile_field_7_2" size="1"> refering to that custom profile field...

(And I already found out how to add an extra column (including the name for the column) to the Memberlist table.)

*bump*

TL;DR: no need to spell it all out for me; just lemme know how the custom profile fields are named in the memberlist_body template.

__________

With a screenshot:

  1. I made a new profile field called "Social Imperials" (this is a guild in an MMORPG)
  2. I want it to show up in the memberlist overview
  3. I presume that I have to change this in the memberlist_body template
  4. By looking at it, and searching on the internet, I've come this far (I've indicated the marked the relevant parts):
The variables in the Memberlist Template 29le71h
    • The green line is added; it creates the header of the column and seems to work fine
    • The yellow line is added; creates the fields in the column and if I just type something in it, it does show up, for every member, so I can presume the code is generally correct
    • The value of the custom field does not show up, so I haven't yet found out how it should be called. Apparently, my assumption that the custom field "social imperials" should be addressed as SOCIAL_IMPERIALS in the template, proves to be false. (I also tried variations with PROFILE_ for it, _VALUE after it, and other attempts)

So, what is the database name for a custom profile field; how can we learn it, with only knowing the name that we gave it in the profile form editor?

There is a easier way to do this:  Just rename the ones (default) you want to change.  The renamed ones will then appear in the memberlist.

Thanks for the suggestion. I contemplated that, but my new custom one is a pull-down menu, while e.g. "hobbies" is an open text field.

Besides, it is also the principle: I want to able to control this feature, and as far as I can tell from reading support threads from other phpBB2 it's just a matter of knowing what method is used by the forum software to give the custom profile fields a variable name.

Actually I am surprised that apparently
  1. I'm the only one who wants to know (seems to be one of the first things you run into when customizing your forum, and the logical consequence of getting the ability to create custom profile fields and access to the template designs; it's a bit weird that it should end there, halfway.)
  2. none of Forumotion's programmers (I understand they are not the same people as the support staff) can't be bothered with such questions. I mean, it is a free service so we have no right to complain, but it also isn't inviting to even consider switching to a paid-for plan (which I did have in mind if it all would work out well) if the only response from the Forumotion staff is a reminder that I shouldn't bump a topic within 24 hours*. I don't want to invest a lot of time in it, if this allegedly full control over the forum appearance already ends here.

*EDIT @SLGray I now notice that you are the manager! You mean that even you don't know?! Or, is there some good reason why free members shouldn't be toying with this? (I can imagine that if this has lead to messed-up web sites, that a host would eventually disencourage members, but in this case that seems like conflicting with the general philosophy of offering control over the design) Would what I wantt be possible within a paid-for plan? I might be willing to consider that.

What SLGray means is that you can change one field in for another, so if you don't like the 'humor' you can change it for another by editing the 'humor' field in the adminpanel. You can change the title to ... 'Hobby' for example, then your members will see 'Hobby' instead of 'Humor' and it will appear in the memberlist.

There isn't really an efficient way to add fields in the memberlist. You can try using javascript but then you will load all the profile pages in the background, so not a good idea.

There is no need to get snobby, we are all only human and no one knows everything. We also (the support forum staff besides the admins) are volunteers and are not paid for what we do. We do not work for the main office of Forumotion. We are just Support forum staff.

We treat all members equal and do our best to provide the best support possible. I am sorry if you do not feel that way, but we certainly do our very best to provide the best support we can to as many members as we can Wink.

I understand what he means, but unlike "Humor", my custom profile field is not an open text field but a pull-dowm menu. You can edit the name of the already existing fields, but not the type.

In the template, the contents of the various profile fields are referred to by variable names memberrow.INTERESTS, memberrow.JOINED, memberrow.LASTVISIT etc. The custom fields will also be refered to in some way: they also show up when you view one profile field, so why should it be impossible (or "inefficient") to have them show up in the memberlist overview? And just adding a column ain't the problem.

But: I admit that maybe my lack of knowledge makes me imagine that it is simple, while it is not.

I apologize if I came off snobby. I interpreted 'Manager' to be a commercial function.

I do not feel personally neglected or mistreated or whatever Smile I was (and still am) surprised that what I'm asking is apparently beyond being possible (because I found a thread of something solving it — I could however not apply that method, because apparantly the variable names are assigned differently here). But I suppose that I'll have to accept it.

Anyway, if I created a bad atmosphere on this forum I apologize again. That was certainly not my intention. I shall not mark this thread as 'solved' (because it's not), but I won't be bumping it either. (I hope that at one point in the near future though, a Sage will come by and solve the issue Smile )

Apart from this issue, I find the Forumotion experience sofar to be pleasant, so I will remain working with for the time being.

Thank you for your time!

We are not saying you can not bump your thread, you can, we are just saying that the bumps must be seperated by 24 hours time Wink.

I am sure this is possible, however, each of us have our own strengths and weaknesses, coding stuff is one of my weaknesses. The manager that is the best with code, @Ange Tuteur has been somewhat in active lately due to the health issues. I have tagged him in this post and hopefully when he comes on, will see it and maybe be able to help you further. In the meantime, I apologize that I can't personally assist further on this issue and would like to ask for your patience. Very Happy

Haha, no need to apologize Brandon Smile You did nothing wrong and my venting of my frustration was not aimed at you (nor anyone else around here; if at anybody then it must have been those wretched, invisible, absent coders who created the web site Wink to avoid misunderstandings: I am attempting irony here to poke fun at my own impatience and grumpiness, not to really bash the web site creators)

And as I said, I do like the overal feel of the Forumotion interface, and already had a good initial experience in being aided by 10spetter10 on another issue, so I'll likely be hanging around here for a while anyway.

_______

EDIT BTW here* is an example of how it can be made to work at another host, but trying out what I found to be logical assumptions of what it could be here, didn't work

*I forgot I still can't use links. It's at www,phpbb,com\community\viewtopic,php?f=46&t=2156151 (you'll have copy-an-paste it and correct the , and \ into . and / Mr. Green )

I'll make it easier for the next one:
https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=2156151

Forumotion actually uses phpBB, they just transformed it to a version that is easier to handle for someone without any background knowlegde of html, php, javascript ...
And in that transformation some functions get lost, they selected the most needed/wanted.

What you can do is make a suggestion of this in the suggestion page. I'll vote yes. Wink

Can i just add some thing here
Support moderators: are staff that work for free to help where we can and move the topics as there marked as solved (Not coders or work in the head office Just members that have the power to mod some parts of the forum)

Forumotion managers:
Are staff member that can mod all around the support forum and Are not Coders Just support staff members that are not in the head office.

Some managers have the right to the ACP of the support forum and a tool to reset your passeords and that is it.

Pro Admin: are members of staff that are in the head office or are made trusted members that can get use of the forum tools and full admin rights to the forum tools.

Support staff that Know lots about codes: We don't Have any coders as such the ones that do have good knowledge of codes are Ange Tuteur, and JScript,

JScript is on sick leave and we do not know when he will be back
Ange Tuteur is sort of on sick leave to but he dose come in and shows he's face when he can. But he is Not a FM coder.

Tech staff / Devs: we do not have a tech staff member here on the support forum we just make a report to them by our tools when there is a problem.

Now and then The Godfather will come in and read the forum and if you ask for a item to be added in the Suggestions part of the forum and it is easy to make it maybe it will get picked out by him and Buttercup and Then it will be put to the tech staff and coders to be put on the big list of updates.

Not all Suggestions get in to the list of things to have thou.

Remember This is Not me having a go I am just saying you can't always have what you want if there is No one here right at this minuet in time It is not something that is so Important it can not wait for a reply.

We do our best to get you your a as fast as we can or if it can not be done then we say so.

Bumping is aloud as my Good buddy brandon_g has said but to make post after post only makes things harder for us to read and makes the thread bigger then it should be and longer to read that is why we ask not to do it unless its got a 24hr gap

we are not robots we are just members just like you are and we don't know everything there is needed to know

All i can say is if you would like to see some thing added then just ask for members to vote for it here
>> Suggestions

My warning for making more then one post was there just to ask you to hold on for 24hrs its a rule everyone has to stick to.
