In progress Request for deletion of recently purchased domain name (& https issue)

Post by kaykay July 16th 2018, 2:03 pm

I recently (10th July) purchased a domain for my forum (using 1200 credits for the privilege).
The request went through but brought problems with it (seems to affect the SSL security of my forum - i.e. when reading a post now the green lock icon disappears and there is a message in the search bar saying some parts of this forum are not secure, images etc).
I decided I did not want this, as I am quite happy with things as they were, with the safe, secure forumotion.com address - so I requested deletion of the domain name (as it says you can do at any time and revert back to your original).
I now have 2 messages confirming my deletion request:

"We have well received your deletion request, it will be treated promptly."
"Your domain name [new domain address] deletion is in process."

OK, but it still has not been deleted, and I am still getting this 'unsecure' message in the posting areas.

It's almost a week now since my request for deletion. How soon is "promptly" ?
Is it standard policy for it to take such a time, or is there something else I should be doing?
I just want to revert back to my original forum address and to feel comfortable that everything is secure, as before.

hello even if you have a ssl certificate and a secure address https if you have content in your forum as images that the url is http, the browser can define them as unsafe contentin the same way without a certificate will also tell you unsafe connection.
It does not depend on your domain, but on the content of your forum, and quiet, if you're already notified of the deleted they do it, you just have to wait

OK - so, I've just discovered that the option in the Admin panel (Configuring the HTTPS protocol) to force compatibility of your forum - had somehow got unticked! - whereas I definitely had this ticked before.
This option forces the compatibility of your forum with the HTTPS protocol. Your forum will display a "Secure" label on all pages.

I have ticked it now - and like magic, everything has gone back to normal in that area. Very Happy

So, as jucarese has said - it was nothing at all to do with the domain and yes, I guess I will just have to have a bit more patience while waiting for that to delete.

I guess this topic can now be marked as SOLVED.

@kaykay I have to warn you about that option. Yes, it is very useful when it comes to showing all the pages in SSL, but you have to keep in mind that if the HTTPS protocol wasn't showing up before it's because there was something external with no HTTPS in it in your forum.

This option disables or hides whatever the source of said "external thing" is, in order to show the HTTPS link. This can turn out on things disappearing from your forum (as images for instance), so if something disappears while having that option on, bare in mind that probably it's due to that, and you would likely have to do a research in your forum in order to find that thing and replace it by another one worth HTTPS Smile.

Thanks, mpelmmc,

Yes, I am aware of that. There may be some hidden Photobucket images still left throughout the forum, as when Photobucket changed their 'free' image policy and decided to start charging, they replaced all their 'free' images with a huge ugly box saying 'Image Deleted'. We had quite a lot of PB images on the forum at the time going way back - most of these I just deleted manually, and replaced with a https version - but then, Forumotion gave us the option to automatically hide all Photobucket images. I can't remember now where that option was in the Admin panel, but I opted for it at the time.

The problem is as you posted you clicked the delete the SSL security and your domain name so our system may still remove them at a later date.

If you would like to keep them I can still ask for this to be stopped but it can take 24 to 48hrs to do.

if you would like me to stop this now please post your forum address.

Oops! To be clear, yes - I still want the newly purchased domain name to be deleted, I won't be using it and really don't need it;

but I definitely want to keep the SSL security with my original forum address, which is: https://lightafterlife.forumotion.com/

Thank you, APE, for your reply and for your help.

I have today received this message:

Dear Forumotion user,

The deletion of your domain name will be effective within the next hours.
Your forum will now only be available by its default address.

You can buy a new domain name at any time in your admin panel > misc > buy credits.

Regards,
Forumotion team

and this information is showing in my admin panel now:
Currently, your forum address is : https://lightafterlife.forumotion.com

Many thanks for all your help in attending to this. x

Well, it's solved inasmuch as I now have my original forum address back safe and sound - thanks to all who had a hand in that... Good

There has been no mention of any reimbursement of the 1200 credits though for the initial purchase. Am I perhaps being a little over-optimistic to expect that at least part of that credit count might be due back to me? Probably am ... my own fault I suppose for jumping into something without really thinking it through.

How does the saying go .... "If it ain't broke - don't fix it!" geek Yep! Wise words, at least in this case - but then again, if nobody ever took any risks in life, we would all still be stuck in the Dark Ages going round in circles ...

So, yes - problem solved and lesson learned in the process! Zen

I believe since you chose to have it removed your not entitled to a refund of credits. We already paid for the domain name and can't get that money back even if we remove the domain from your site as we still own it for the rest of the year.

Maybe @Ape can ask this in the ticket but I dont think this is eligible for any sort of refund unfortunatelly.

Hello Sadly the domain name has to be paid for before we give it to you so sadly I don't think the credits will be gave back as the domain name will no longer be open to others to buy for one year.

I have asked our head office but I don't think they will say yes sadly but I will see tomorrow or the day after to see if they reply.

Kind regards.

APE.
