Is It Alright To Re-Register Deleted Members
Hello
Is it alright to re-register deleted members from a previous forum that I had over 400+ members.
I have re-opened one of my closed boards that I deleted members when I had it closed for over a year and a half.
However seeing that I am not an active member on other forums I though it was a kind gesture to re-register a few members.
Is it alright to do this or does it breach data privacy
I have re-registered 25 and received one complaint so far
Regards
Cassini

hello
personally, i do not think it is ok since you are reusing their personal info like email without asking them
secondly i do not think it is polite to do anything without asking not even edit a post unless their behaviour breaking the rules

Apologies, I forgot to add that on re-registrations I emailed them, at the moment I have had only one complaint.
Re: Is It Alright To Re-Register Deleted Members
Hi,
When you mailed them, how many answered ?
If all but one answered yes, thats ok. Else if they did not replied it's no.
It's what we call consent.
It's not only a matter of politeness

Re: Is It Alright To Re-Register Deleted Members
So if I can read between the lines, none of the 28 agreed, and one of them even complained ?
I think you should stop there, before having real problems.

Re: Is It Alright To Re-Register Deleted Members
What you could have done is done a backup of members this means them members are just re added to the forum and NO Email or PM would have been sent.
By law you can do a backup of members and your forum and that is fine to re add a member using there Email address can have problems but a backup of deleted accounts is not a problem if you have deleted the account's and they never done it them selves.

Re: Is It Alright To Re-Register Deleted Members
When I closed the forum in March 2020 I just deleted all members but not deleted the admin log.
I was not originally going to open up the forum however seeing that I had a change of heart.
March this year decided to restart forum however I only decided to open the forum up to members this month.
I thought re-registrations a few and a personal e-mail would help, however Neptune's comment was good advice.

Re: Is It Alright To Re-Register Deleted Members
@cassini probably it would be better to send a newsletter or a mass pm and ask them to re-join the new forum if they want. But doing it by yourself is not the best, especially because you can't know their passwords

Unfortunately Niko, they are all deleted therefore cannot send mass pm or newsletter
Re: Is It Alright To Re-Register Deleted Members
One solution is never delete a member just deactivate it
AP > Users & Groups > Users > Search Users
Locate the one you want to deactivate and press the username.
The profile will load.
Scroll to the bottom and look for this -
User is active: No

Re: Is It Alright To Re-Register Deleted Members
Like i said you could have just done a backup of the forum using the Forum Utilities it has a setting there for backing up just members.
They would have had their old account's and passwords then you could have sent a news letter out to all members saying you have changed your mind about the forum and have re opened it to the public and if they want to use it then they can but if they want to remove the account then you can get them to log in and PM you asking to be removed.
Anyway as this topic has been answered would you say its been solved for you ?

I do not know about Forum Utilities As I said it's a bit late now as I have deleted them all in July this year and not reopened
until this month.

Re: Is It Alright To Re-Register Deleted Members
If you just want to restore members, you need to select the members option. Also it needs to be a date before you deleted them all.

You need one post to send a PM.

I tried that however it didn't work
Re: Is It Alright To Re-Register Deleted Members
furthest back is September 2020,
you can not back up earlier from this date that you saw so if you deleted the members earlier then the system can not retrieve them
as i mentioned above this list offers you backup for more or less than one year
Re: Is It Alright To Re-Register Deleted Members
When you start the process it allows you to go back to when the forum was created in May 2017
However when you continue with the process, yes Skouliki you are right 28/9/2020 is the earliest.
I deleted all members in July 2020 so it's obvious that I cannot recover the deleted members

Anyhow thank you all who have commented I think we shall close this
