Forum allowing external forum codes for smilies
Hi some of my members use sherv a lot on another forum to copy and paste the code and the emoji/emoticon shows up.
When I first created the forum they didn't work on forumotion. This afternoon a member has just posted one. I tried it and it is indeed working.
I am confused as I am sure I read on here somewhere that they would not work and that I had to load emoticons from my computer to the selection available for forum members.
Could anyone explain this to me please.
Thank you

Re: Forum allowing external forum codes for smilies
I guess it would depend how the code is made. If it is html it is more likely to work than if it uses bbcode.

Re: Forum allowing external forum codes for smilies
I am confused why it didn't work and now it does. Don't get me wrong I am happy. Just slightly disturbed by it.
Though it does look like sherv have been changing things on their site. So maybe thats it.
This is the code that works. I have added a a couple of dots in front of the www.sherv.net bit to stop it working this shows how it used to appear on our forum
And here I have removed some brackets to show what the actual code is (minus the removed brackets)
URL=http://www.sherv.net/]IMG]http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/hello/dancing-good-morning-smiley-emoticon.gif[/IMG[/URL
And this is it working
With this new forum if anything changes that I don't understand it worries me.
I can't confirm the old code that didn't work is the same as the code I have showed above.
Thanks for your reply Brandon, I guess I am just looking for reassurance it's nothing sinister from more knowledgeable folk like yourself

Re: Forum allowing external forum codes for smilies
Ok so it is bbcode. They are just adding it as an image which will work on any forum just about. It's possible there was an issue with the older code preventing it from working that perhaps has since been corrected, who knows.
I really do not have an answer since sherv.net is not a Forumotion service as such we aren't familiar with the background processes they might use.
Edit: After checking sherv.net I see they are not https, which means that any forum that is https would likely have blocked it from appearing. Have you recently changed your forum from https to http?

Re: Forum allowing external forum codes for smilies
Its set to https with forcing HTTPS compatibility ("Secure" label) : set to yes.
Does sound like something has changed with sherv from a lot of what you say though Brandon
Just want to confirm it appears safe to use before signing off

Re: Forum allowing external forum codes for smilies
The codes has always worked if it has a
as long as you use it in
The image is just hosted outside of our systems I don't like this kind of way though as the site can go down or the items can be removed with out warning and then it can give you problems later on and it may not be seen for weeks or eve months.
My advice is host them you self so you know where the codes are saved.
EDIT: if the URL is http and your forum is HTTPS then the url will not work.
You can save it on Servimg by the host url then add it here
our system will then save it as HTTPS for you.

Re: Forum allowing external forum codes for smilies
Thanks Ape, I understand it now. So basically early some wouldn't work as they didn't pass security. Those that now work do.
Great suggestion to host them. Thanks so much for showing me visually how to do this, such a big help.
Thanks to you both. This topic is solved
